David Joshua Maxwell was born in New York City, New York, North American continent, Terra, Sol-Jupiter system, the youngest son of Esther and Jacob Maxwell. Jacob is the younger brother of Tova Maxwell Valley, making David (pronounced dah-veed) Ruth Valley's cousin. (see Ruth Valley)
David grew up fairly privileged and, as a teenager, got involved with needle racing and the Clave. He became a good friend of Cobra (see Jeremy Paget) and Kamikaze (see Sulu Takeda), though he didn't approve of their relationship with each other, or, in fact, much of Kam's relationships with anyone - or of Kam himself.
Called Barak at the Clave, David had an on-going relationship (if one can call screwing on a regular basis and not much else a "relationship") with a Groupie known as "Daffy." This was Daffy Gollub (see Daphne Gollub), who was not-so-secretly-to-everyone-but-David in love with the handsome Racer. For his part, when he did see her as something other than a convenient sexual partner, he disapproved of her earthy manner and sarcastic wit and her use of recreational chemicals. Needless to say, the relationship never got anywhere healthy.
When Ruth came to Terra, David became her self-appointed chaperone. This was partly due to family obligation, and partly to a natural tendency to want to control people's lives (which must run in the Maxwell side of the family as well as the Antari side). He was for the most part unsuccessful, most spectacularly regarding the Indiian racer, Katana (see Terry).
David was instumental, along with Jeremy and Ruth, in revealing Ruis Calvario (see Ruis Calvario) as the Hunter. In later years, David went into Security for Cameron Intragalactic (more money than God) Holding Company, where he met and married the boss's daughter, Catherine Cameron.
