Daffy Gollub stormed into the rec room, followed by Pavel Chekov, and pointed at Ruth Valley and Jilla Majiir, who were tuning up their instruments for an Impromptu Concert.

"You!" Gollub snapped. "Play that owning song!"

"Owning..." Jilla began. Daffy cut her off.

"Don't start, it's not that cute," she snarled. "Come on, it's a Valley song, the one Bar - David used to love so fucking much!"

"Daphne, please..." Pavel attempted.

"Shut up, ya zevel!" Gollub barked at him.

Ruth closed her eyes briefly and Daffy said, "Yeah, yeah, invade my head, just like that. And that's it. Play that one."

"Jilla doesn't..." Ruth said, then, at Gollub's glare, thought better of it. "Okay, I'll play it myself." She shrugged an apology at Jilla, who nodded graciously and rose with her lyrette to take a seat next to Sulu.

"It is too cute," he murmured to her.

"You shut up, too, schmuck," Daffy said.

"What did I do?" Sulu wanted to know.

"You have a zayin."

"Dafshka, can we please discuss this like..." Pavel tried again.

Gollub put her hands belligerently on her hips and stared at him. "Play it!" she told Valley.

Ruth sighed, strummed a few experimental chords, then played three low, descending notes: da da dum. Then a count of three slow measures, then a repeated da da dum. Another three measures, another da da dum, a downbeat, and she started to sing:

"You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys"

"I never said..." Pavel broke in. Daffy glared at him.

"And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display"

"Display? I am not the one who causes displays..."

"'Cause you don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down ‘cause I'll never stay"

Sulu snorted. "That's not the way I hear it," he murmured.

"I thought I told you..." Daffy began warningly.

"Shutting up, ma'am."

"I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do"

"Since when?" Pavel muttered.

"So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you"

"If that was all you asked, we wouldn't be..."

"I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please"

"Daphne, adults cannot always say and do whatever they..."

"I can," she replied stubbornly.

"You are a Starfleet officer. You obey orders. There are times you cannot..."

"Yeah, but in a relationship with you isn't one of them, bubee."

"Dafshka, I did not ask you to..."

"And don't tell me what to do
Ohhh
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you..."

"Do not drink zo much Daphne, do not smoke zo much, do not be zo loud, do not flirt vith ze vaiters..."

"Do not make fun of my accent," Pavel put in pointedly.

"I don't tell you what to say
No...
Don't tell you what to do..."

"Two can play that game, you know," Chekov continued, then affected a nasal, falsely cheerful New York tone. "Lighten up, bubee, don't be such a yutz! I'm only teasing, Moscow, why don't you make love to me in a public square!"

"So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you"

"I thought that's what you liked about me," Daffy said, showing her teeth.

"It is, I do..." Pavel returned, completely flustered. "It is simply that... just not... Dafshka, must you... all the time?"

"I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free.."

The song faded out as the couple continued their bickering. Ruth's huge eyes were twinkling, and she began playing a light, bouncy tune.

"Come-a come-a down, doobie do, down down
Ah come-a come-a down, doobie do, down down
Come-a come-a down, doobie do, down down
Breakin' up is hard to do..."
