Uhura was born in 2216 in Tanzania on the African continent of Terra in the Sol-Jupiter system. Like most Terrans, she was educated through the elementary and secondary grades in her home land, and attended Alterra University, starting at the age of 15. Her surname, Nyerere, is not well known, and given both her culture’s preferred custom of giving the surname first, and standard Starfleet protocols, her name and rank are rendered as “(rank) Uhura”; hence, this is the name she goes by. As her birth culture is also informal regarding such things as manner of address, this has posed no serious problems for her.
Uhura joined Starfleet after completing her undergraduate work at Alterra. Uhura has a natural talent for languages, so it was almost inevitable that she end up in Communications. Seeing as how she also has a natural talent for gossip, this made it damn near destiny. She was assigned to the Enterprise right out of the Academy.
Bright, beautiful, with a dry sense of humor, Uhura is a very popular crewmember. She’s very friendly, but definitely has her private, personal side. She’s a talented dancer, and her voice is a lovely soprano. She often hums or sings as she works, and entertains the crew often with her witty extrapolations of popular ballads.
Uhura has a reputation of being something of a romance counselor. Part of this is due to the fact that she’s a good listener. Another part is because she’s a genuinely warm and caring individual. A third is that she’s a good student of Human (and non-Human) nature. But mostly it’s because, being Chief of Communications, she knows everything about everyone. And she’s not afraid to use that knowledge when she has to.
Uhura has had a number of minor affairs, but she’d never been seriously involved with anyone – until she met the Haven Security Specialist, Tomor Rand (see Tomor Rand). It was lust at first sight for both of them, and they both eagerly look forward to any circumstances which will allow them to get back into mutually compromising positions.
