Workin' On A Starship Blues

A Filk to the tune of Workin' at the Car Wash Blues by Jim Croce

Well, I had just got out of the Academy
Doin' four years of herbert's work
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
They wouldn't listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man said, "We got all that we can use."
Now I got them steadily depressin'
Lowdown, mind-messin'
Workin' on a starship blues

You know I should be sittin' in an air-conditioned office with a swivel chair
Talkin' some trash to my personal yeoman, sayin'
"Hey, now, mister, come on over here."
Instead I'm stuck here filin' these triplicate reports
And checkin' out the Jeffries tubes
With them steadily depressin'
Lowdown, mind-messin'
Workin' on a starship blues

You know a woman of my abilities
She should be makin' out the Captain's log
But till I get myself stripes
I'll just shut up with the gripes
Take orders and work like a dog

Well, all I can do is to shake my head
'Cause to me it's perfectly clear
That workin' for Pontificatin' Bwana Jim
Is an undiscovered set of ears
So baby, don't 'spect to see me in no double-striped sleeves
Commandin' Anglo-Terran crews
'Cause I got them steadily depressin'
Lowdown, mind-messin'
Workin' on a starship blues

Now baby, don't 'spect to see me in no double-striped sleeves
Commandin' any kind of crews
'Cause I got them steadily depressin'
Lowdown, mind-messin'
Workin' on a starship blues
Yeah, I got them steadily depressin'
Lowdown, mind-messin'
I ain't a Vulcan blues
