Richard Novacek was a psychology studen in Vienna. Tall, thin, nervous, with dark hair and startlingly blue eyes, he was a mass of psycological insecurities, which made him controlling, erratic and condescending. He was two years older than Jade Han (see Jade Han), and they met through their shared studies. Jade was first interested, then intrigued, and eventually fell in love (though to this day, she can't figure out why). Their relationship was rocky and tempestuous, and Richard constantly berated Jade's knowledge of psychology, holding himself up as innately superior. It was Richard who introduced Jade to psycho-cins, and it was due to Richard's manipulation of her that Jade no longer drinks alcohol.
Yet, for all that, he eventually committed suicide - cruelly leaving a note that blamed Jade's inadequacies, saying that if she'd been any good at her chosen profession, she would've seen his problems and helped him. Jade internalized this, letting it cement inside her. This has led to Jade's determination to be the best psychologist in the Federation. Unfortunately, it has also created a deep a phobia within her regarding emotional attachments. This phobia can best be summed up by the mantra that plagues her nightmares - when Jade loves someone, they die.
