Although Daphne Gollub had kissed him on the lift earlier in the day, Pavel Chekov did not expect her to be waiting for him outside his cabin when he got off duty. "Miss Gollub," he greeted her with a smile. "What are you doing here?"

"Waiting for you," she said in a rather business-like manner.

"I hope you haven't been waiting long," he said politely.

"No." she replied. "I know your schedule... And it's not hard to predict when a chronometer's going to strike twelve."

"Hmm." He folded his hands behind his back. "Then can I assume your... investigation of me is proceeding well?"

"I'm done," she announced.

"Really?"

"Yes. I know everything about you."

"Oh?"

"Except for a few minor details."

"Such as?"

Gollub cocked her head to one side and asked seriously, "How do you feel about suspense?"

Chekov strongly suspected that this question had a double meaning. "I dislike it."

"How about anticipation?"

This was definitely leading in a pleasant direction. "Overrated."

"How about patience? Waiting for just the right time?"

"Sometimes useful," he concluded. "But not of critical importance in other situations."

"Looking before you leap?"

"Advisable if not taken to extremes."

"Throwing caution to the wind?'

He smiled. "Sometimes very enjoyable."

"Wery," Daphne agreed. "Well, aren't you going to invite me in to see your etchings?"

"What?"

Gollub sighed and took his arm. "I can see we're just going to have to work on our banter, aren't we?"

Once they'd stepped inside his cabin, Chekov took her into his arms and kissed her with a passion that surprised Daphne - despite the fact she'd been warned.

"He's very polite to the point of sometimes seeming a little shy," Yeoman Alice Snowden, a former girlfriend, had told her. "That is, until you get behind closed doors."

"Well, alrighty then," Daffy breathed, when he finally let her up for air.

He stopped her as she began to unfasten her uniform. "Allow me," he said, kissing her fingers as he removed them. Each part of her neck, shoulders, arms, and chest received a welcoming kiss as it was uncovered.

"He's one of those men who just love women," Alice had told her. "Worships them."

Daphne Gollub felt positively venerated as her uniform dropped to the floor and the navigator's warm tongue leisurely explored each of her breasts in turn. The Russian's attitude was impressively reverent as he sat her down on his bunk to remove her boots and hose.

"So you do have a thing about feet," she concluded as he lingered at her toes.

"That's just a silly rumor," he assured her, letting his hand travel slowly up her leg, caressing gently as he went. "I also have great appreciation for ankles, calves, knees, thighs..."

Although the course the navigator was plotting was no mystery, Daphne had to bite her lip to keep from gasping when his fingers finally entered her. His touch was simultaneously terribly gentle and delicately bold.

"He makes you feel like you're the only woman in the galaxy," Alice had told her. "It's really intense, especially at first."

Chekov used his free arm to gently lower her to a reclining position on the bunk as he kissed and caressed her deeply.

"Martha Landon broke up with him because she thought he was obsessed with her," Gollub's mental tape of her conversation with Alice continued. "But then again, she was gorgeous Miss Martha Landon. He may have been obsessed with her. All I know is that every woman who dates him feels that way... at least at first..."

"Not that I'm complaining," Daphne interrupted when her lips were free. "But aren't you a little overdressed for this?"

Chekov smiled and began to unfasten his uniform.

Gollub stopped him. "Allow me," she said, pulling up onto her knees so she could get his tunic off.

The Russian cooperated, but insisted on kissing any part of her that came within his reach.

"The only trouble with his being so crazy about women," Alice's voice continued annoyingly inside her head, "is that he's crazy about all women."

The navigator sighed deliciously as she unfastened his pants.

"He falls in love quickly and deeply," mental Alice warned Daffy. "But also he falls in love often."

The Russian moaned as Gollub delivered some welcoming kisses and caresses of her own.

"He will look at you as if you are the most beautiful, sexy, fascinating woman he's ever seen," mental Alice continued. "But tomorrow, he may look the cocktail waitress the very same way."

Chekov took her by the shoulders and guided her carefully back down to the bunk.

"He falls in love so easily and so often that you're never really sure he's in love at all..."

So, Daffy thought, silencing her mental kibitzer as she positioned herself under the navigator. It's simple. I just don't fall in love with him.

Looking into the Russian's sweet brown eyes, she knew that wasn't going to prove to be an easy task. The charmingly joyful sigh he uttered as he entered her made it even more difficult to keep a cool-headed perspective.

I'm not going to fall in love, she resolved -- in spite of the way their bodies fit together like they'd been specially designed to do so and immediately fell into a the sort of sweet, easy rhythm it often took months to achieve with other lovers. Well, maybe just a little....
